We’re in our sixth week of this season focusing on Leadership Values. If you’re new here, you can go back to episode 121 for the intro to this season. We’ve been hearing about the different leadership values from women who lead in different ways. The latest interview was with Melody Box. Melody chose the paired values of Passion and Commitment.
Today we’ll take a closer look at these paired values. I like to think of them as the energy and the engine of leadership.
I’m sure you can picture an example of a leader who has lost sight of the passion for their work or even the vision for the organization or team. When the passion is lost a leader can start to simply phone it in. The results can be devastating to the morale and work of the team or organization. Conversely, we can bring to mind an example of a leader who demonstrates passion and commitment for their work. They infuse encouragement and energy for the entire team.
I don’t want to convey that we need to demonstrate passion at all times. We all experience times of going through the motions. This is a natural part of being human. Passion can ebb and flow just like the ocean waves or even our breath. But when a leader has lost passion and commitment the entire team, business, organization or even family loses. The model and influence of a leader can either be positive or negative.
Energy=Passion
Engine=Commitment
We need to spend some reflective time to clarify our passion and commitment. Here are three starting questions that can guide you in this reflection. I recommend setting aside 15 – 20 minutes minimum for this exercise.
- What am I passionate about?
- How do I show my commitment to my passion(s)?
- What do I need to make space for to grow these paired values?
Sometimes an exercise like this can reveal an area where you might be feeling stuck without an obvious way to make changes. This is a great coaching topic. I’d love to spend time in a coaching exploration session with you. My gift to you! Click this link to schedule your complimentary session. You’ll be amazed what can transpire in just 50 minutes!
