A term from story writing sticks with me: through line. It’s the theme of the story. It’s the thread that weaves all the way from beginning to end and holds the story together. You have a through line.
I have quoted from a thin, pithy book on more than one occasion. The book? Let Your Life Speak by Parker J. Palmer. This particular quote speaks to me about through line although using different words:
It is the self planted in us by the God who made us in God’s own image–the self that wants nothing more, or less, than for us to be who we were created to be.
Life is a journey of knowing and unknowing; of connecting and drifting and reconnecting. When we arrive at the second half of life we may have lost sight of our through line. It can happen by playing a role rather than being authentic (False Self vs. True Self).
Lucky You! You are alive at a time in history where so much more is known about human development and neurobiology. There are many people writing, speaking and teaching about how to live a full, authentic and wholehearted life. The abundant life spoken of by Jesus.
One of the resources available is this medium– podcasts. I listened to a great interview by Rebekah Lyons on the podcast Rhythms for Life. She interviewed the two authors of a new book intended to help you find your calling. The book’s title is You On Purpose: Discover Your Calling and Create the Life You were Meant to Live by Dr. Stephanie Shackelford and Bill Denzel
You are on a journey in this second half of life to reconnect with your through line. These are just a couple of resources available to help you along the way. Maybe joining a small group of fellow journeyers is the next right step for you. Or perhaps having a coaching exploration session is the next right step.
