Please tell me I’m not alone with the kind of day I had today! Distractions that appeared like emergencies took two hours of time and took my emotions outside my window of tolerance. Ever had that happen?
I received an email that held perceived emergency status “requiring immediate attention” sending my highly reactive self outside my window of tolerance. I learned that phrase from Aundi Kolber in her book Try Softer. She shared a beautiful, portable somatic practice called Box Breathing that can help us calm ourselves in a stress response situation. I sat in the government office chair and practiced it while I waited TWO HOURS to be called. Which I never was by the way.
I’ve been embracing the idea Emily P. Freeman floated at the end of 2023 “January is the new week between Christmas and New Year’s”. The invitation is to take time to settle into the New Year without the feeling of hitting the ground running. This idea is as a spacious as it is silly sounding. Maybe it can be a riddle: When is a month a week long? In January.
