We all have experienced so many losses over the past several years; loss of jobs, loss of revenue and even loss of loved ones. That’s where I find myself today. In this personal reflection I point out the practice of being quiet, of having eyes to see and ears to hear the gifts of grace that are offered when you’re hurting.

I had an unexpected call with unexpected news; I learned today that my brother had died.

We had a complicated relationship within a complicated family, yet he was my only sibling. Where is the grace in the midst of loss? That’s where the practice of contemplative silence has born fruit.

Our pastor asked the question “What is God unveiling in you when your circumstances shift suddenly?” As I sat with that question today I realized God was unveiling forgiveness. I hadn’t thought about these things in quite a few years and yet today, the gift of grace I saw was forgiveness.

I share all this by way of encouraging you in whatever you’re going through. Gifts of grace are everywhere, both big and small. Do you practice seeing with eyes of faith? Making space in your calendar to be quiet and sit in silence to listen with ears to hear is another practice that can help reveal the grace to help in time of need.
